Aluminum is the most important component of aluminum foil, and its history is long and legendary, spanning centuries. The earliest known use of aluminum dates back to around 5000 BC with the ancient Mesopotamians, who used aluminum compounds in ceramics. From its initial rudimentary applications, this remarkable metal has evolved into one of the most widely used materials. Today, aluminum is a fundamental material in numerous industries, including transportation, construction, electronics, packaging, and renewable energy.   • The early days of aluminum

Alum, a compound with a history of approximately 7,000 years, derives its name from Latin, meaning “bitter salt,” referring to the crystalline disulfide it contains in its natural mineral form.

Besides its use in ceramics, alum was initially used in medicine, dyeing, chemical grinding, and defense. Interestingly, it was also used as a fire-retardant coating for wood to protect fortresses from enemy fire.

During the Enlightenment (1695-1815), scientists identified alum as an oxide of a new metal. Aluminum was first isolated in 1825 by Hans Christian Ørsted, who reacted aluminum chloride (AlCl₃) with potassium amalgam (an alloy of potassium and mercury).

The early large-scale refining of ores into usable aluminum was extremely complex. This challenge severely limited the supply of aluminum, making it even more valuable than gold.

It is said that French Emperor Napoleon III was a proponent of aluminum. His goal was to use this strong yet lightweight metal to manufacture weapons and armor, enhancing his soldiers’ competitiveness on the battlefield. To achieve this, Napoleon III funded the research of Henri Saint-Clair de Ville, who discovered a chemical method for extracting pure aluminum.However, this was still a very slow process. Legend has it that Napoleon III was so frustrated by the slow progress of the aluminum industry that he ordered most of France’s aluminum reserves to be melted down and made into precious tableware. Imagine—he and his dignitaries had the privilege of using aluminum tableware at the royal table, while others could only use gold tableware!

  • The beginning of prosperity

The next major milestone in aluminum development came in 1845 when aluminum was produced for the first time in its purest form. In 1856, aluminum was produced industrially for the first time, an achievement made by French chemist Henri Étienne Sainte-Claire Deville. Thirty years later, aluminum development experienced its greatest leap. In 1886, French engineer Paul Héroult and American engineer Charles Martin Hall developed the Hall-Héroult process, which is still used today to refine alum into aluminum. Notably, in 1888, Hall co-founded the Pittsburgh Reduction Co., which later became the aluminum giant Alcoa.

Industrial production rapidly increased the supply of aluminum. Aluminum became more readily available and inexpensive, and was therefore widely used in a variety of products. By the early 1890s, this metal was widely used in jewelry, eyeglass frames, optical instruments, and many everyday items.

 

 

  • Other important milestones in the aluminum industry:
  1. 1884 – A large aluminum casting was installed atop the Washington Monument upon its completion.
  2. 1893 – A statue of Anderos, the Greek god of love, was erected in Piccadilly Circus, London. It is considered the first significant work of art made of aluminum.
  3. Late 1880s – Aluminum cookware began production in the late 19th century. In the early decades of the 20th century, it gradually replaced copper and cast iron cookware.
  4. 1903 – To reduce weight during the legendary flight, Charles Taylor, the Wright brothers’ mechanic, suggested using an aluminum-copper alloy to construct the cylinder block of their rudimentary four-cylinder gasoline engine. This was a novel idea for reducing the overall weight of the aircraft. Thanks to the use of aluminum, the 180-pound engine (20 pounds lighter than designed) exceeded expectations, enabling the Wright Flyer to take off successfully.
  5. 1907 – Aluminum foil was invented.
  6. 1911 – Chocolate manufacturers were among the first groups to apply this technology on an industrial scale. Theodore Tobler wrapped his new Toblerone chocolate bar in tin foil.
    During both World Wars, aluminum became a crucial strategic resource for military aviation. Aircraft manufacturers extensively used this lightweight yet strong metal to construct fuselages, engine components, and other military equipment. Aluminum’s unique properties enabled the creation of faster, more fuel-efficient aircraft, giving the Allies a significant technological advantage in air combat and transport.
  7. 1957 – Sputnik 1, Earth’s first artificial satellite, was launched; it consisted of two joined aluminum hemispheres.
  8. 1959 – Aluminum beverage cans were invented, with brewer Coors becoming the first company to use them.
  9. 1978 – Due to increased demand, aluminum became a traded commodity and entered the London Metal Exchange, the world’s oldest industrial metals exchange.
